The Short Answer

Running a professional assessment environment costs real money, and the monthly assessment fee does two things: it acts as a filter for serious candidates and offsets the substantial operational costs of running a professional trading environment.

The Complete Picture

Our Core Business is Trading, Not Assessment Fees

We’re a proprietary trading desk. The money the business makes comes from traders performing on the Live Desk, not from assessment fees. That distinction matters, because it’s what shapes everything below.

The desk already includes traders who built their careers at firms like Point72, Gelber Group and Jane Street. The assessment exists alongside that, not instead of it.

Why We Run an Assessment at All

Because talent turns up in places traditional recruitment never looks. We could carry on hiring only from the usual channels - STEM degrees, institutional backgrounds - but we’d miss people who’ve built real skill outside them. The assessment is how we find those traders.

Real Costs of Professional Evaluation

Running a professional assessment environment involves substantial expenses:

  • Trading infrastructure - professional platforms (e.g., Trading Technologies) that cost significantly more than retail alternatives
  • Market data - live market data, squawk services, and professional-grade analytics tools
  • Compliance and risk management systems - for perspective, even a trading firm operating with under $100 million in capital requires approximately $700,000 annually just for trade surveillance infrastructure
  • Development resources - performance reviews, sessions and the desk environment
  • Administration - the infrastructure to run and evaluate a large number of traders at once

The Assessment Fee As a Filtering Mechanism

Without an assessment fee, the programme fills with people who aren’t serious, which dilutes the resources available to those who are and makes the whole thing unsustainable. The fee isn’t there to make money. It ensures candidates demonstrate genuine commitment and understand the professional nature of the opportunity.

How That Differs From the Rest of the Industry

Many firms in this space use open assessments primarily to profit from transaction fees, evaluation fees, or subscription models. TDD explicitly does not operate this way.

The fundamental difference is in our business model:

  • Funded trader programmes: Generate revenue primarily from evaluation fees and repeated assessments
  • TDD: Generates revenue when traders perform on the Live Desk

How the Fee Credit Works

To underscore our commitment to trader development rather than fee collection, we credit the assessment rate of $389 per monthly payment against your first successful withdrawal on our Live Junior Desk. This clearly demonstrates that our focus is on identifying and developing profitable traders, not collecting assessment fees. We’d rather have you on the desk and performing.

Who This Isn't For

If the monthly fee is a significant barrier, this probably isn’t the right route for you, and there’s no shame in that. The assessment suits traders who already have an edge and want the capital, the scale and the performance management to do something with it.

We're direct about what this means: if you're not confident in your ability to demonstrate consistent, risk-adjusted returns, this pathway isn't for you - and that's perfectly fine. We'll continue building our desk through traditional recruitment regardless.
